Yellowknife, the capital city of Northern Territories is situated along the north shore of Great Slave Lake which is again a natural wonder, so you can call it the city of natural wonders. Yellowknife has derived its name from the copper knives long used by the local First Nations. First Nations people have inhabited the Yellowknife area for thousands of years. Gold and diamond mines at this place are among the biggest in Canada that has driven its growth and made it ‘Diamond Capital’ of North America.

Old Town

It is believed that the Old Town of Yellowknife is thriving with history and culture that brings art and expression together. Old Town only dates from the mid-1930s with the discovery of gold. It was the time when miners pitched tents and built wooden shacks on Willow Flats, Peace River Flats, Latham Island and every piece of the rock. Take a stroll along Ragged Ass Road to breathe out in the vintage atmosphere. Around the Old Town shoreline, there are old-world eateries, fishing, and tour outfitters and a continuous buzzing of seaplanes taking visitors on fishing tours.

Best Time to Visit Yellowknife

The city has a subarctic climate with bitterly cold winters and mild summers. Yellowknife is one of the sunniest places in Canada during summers. The month of August has the most rainfall. The first snow of autumn usually arrives in September or October but can show up as early as August. Winters are way too chilly. If you want to see the Aurora/Northern Lights, you should go between mid-November to the beginning of April as it tends to be the best times of the year for a good panorama. Other than that, summer is considered the best time to visit the place.
