The Angel of Independence
The Angel of Independence is the figure of a winged goddess of victory standing atop and is one of the most beloved symbols of the town. It is officially known as Monumento a la Independencia (Monument to Independence) and is popularly called El Ángel. This victory column is located on the major thoroughfare of Paseo de la Reforma in the downtown. It was built in 1910 to honor the centennial of the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. It has also become a favorite gathering place for political rallies and various sporting events. You can enter the monument, view the memorial plaques at the base, and climb to the top of the tower with no entry fee.
